THE US, UK and Saudi-backed and organised ‘rebels’ who have failed to overthrow the government of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, who has the support of the Syrian army and people, have now been handed over high-powered anti-tank weaponry, the likes of which have been withheld from them up till now.
On Monday, Israel’s Debkafile website confirmed that two Syrian rebel militias – the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian Revolutionary Front – have been supplied with advanced US weapons, including armour-piercing, optically-guided BGM-71 TOW missiles, by courtesy of the Pentagon.
Late last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that US President Barack Obama and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah ‘appeared to narrow their disagreement on assisting Syrian rebels’ during a meeting between the two.
The US decision to step up its war comes after the Syrian army have driven the rebels back, and it is now obvious that President Assad intends to register in the last week in April to stand once again for the Syrian presidency.
This is a contest he is bound to win, barring assassination, since he has proven his ability to defend the Syrian state from the Islamist hordes and their imperialist backers. The US, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are determined to make one last desperate effort to try and see that this does not happen.
Their move also comes after the shock of the US-EU operation to grab Ukraine, via a coup, coming unstuck. It was just too much for Russia to swallow, leading to the loss of the Crimea, and the potential loss of the entire Ukraine.
It also follows on from the collapse of the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, after the Palestinian people refused to allow their leadership to bin their basic national demands, despite huge pressure from the USA and Israel. The US is now desperate to be seen to be asserting itself.
Its decision to rearm the Syrian rebels is part of a move by the Saudi-Turkey, US alliance to reassert itself by overthrowing Assad, strengthening Israel and putting an end to the new-found Russian influence in the Middle East.
The Turkish military have already begun their action, shooting down a Syrian jetfighter and allowing the Islamists to take a Syrian border post in an operation that began from the Turkish side of the border! Erdogan has been accused by his internal opponents of not only extreme corruption but being absolutely desperate to start an open war with Syria.
All the talk is now about the 3,000 Syrian renegades being trained by the US army in Jordan for an attempt at a march on Damascus – the air cover for the invading force to be provided by the Saudi airforce, so that the invaders will be able to use the US weaponry to knock out Syrian tanks.
On Monday afternoon, White House press secretary Jay Carney said, ‘We are going to continue to press in every way we can to assist the Syrian people.’ Carney said the administration will assess all options before making a decision based on what the White House believes is the right course of action to take in support of the Syrian people and in support of the United States’ own national security interests.
The fact is, however, that the US will not be able to use its own troops directly, and nor will the UK, since the working class of both countries have made it clear that they will not stand for another imperialist war.
British workers and US workers will give their full support to all those fighting against imperialist adventures, whether it be in Syria, Palestine, Lebanon or Ukraine. The Arab and Turkish peoples will not stand by and watch another attempt by the agent forces to march on Damascus, this time with Saudi planes and American anti-tank weaponry seeking to clear the way.
This projected adventure must be turned into a huge disaster for the imperialist powers. The masses of Lebanon, Palestine and Syria must respond by throwing the imperialists, and their Zionist and Islamist agents out of the Middle East, and by replacing the feudal and pro-imperialist states with an Arab Federation of Socialist States. This will bring peace and huge progress to the entire region.
