LABOUR MINISTERS have been warned that the Labour government must prepare for ‘the threat of food shortages’.
The National Audit Office has already warned that the government needed to do more to prepare for potential ‘catastrophic events’ that could cause severe disruption to the nation’s food supplies.’
The NAO has called for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) to work with businesses and households urgently to draw up emergency plans that could be used in the event of shortages.’
Tom Bradshaw, president of the National Farmers Union, commented that the country had ‘taken it for granted that food will always be available’ as he called for ‘more support for agricultural businesses.’
A Defra spokesman said: ‘The Prime Minister has made it clear that food security is national security, he’s met with farmers and recognised the challenges they face.
‘We are working with farmers and the food and drink industry to strengthen the UK’s food security.’
Angela Eagle, the new Environment Secretary, has also spoken up to encourage Britons to stock up in case they are unreachable by emergency services in the event of extreme weather events expected later this year.
She told the Guardian newspaper: ‘If you’ve got store of a bit of food that can keep you going for a while, you are going to be a lot better off.’
The National Audit Office (NAO) has issued a special statement that the government needs to do more to halt any disruption of food supplies.
The ‘spending watchdog’ has warned that disruption to our food system is ‘becoming more and more likely and potentially more severe’.

However, the crisis is now sharpening and millions of workers and youth can see that capitalism is crashing.
Faced with this crisis situation it is high time for the TUC trade unions to take action to ensure that millions of UK workers and youth do not go hungry as British capitalism crashes.
The TUC Congress begins in Brighton on 13 September.
We must make sure that it is lobbied by thousands of workers and youth to call a general strike and go forward to a workers government.
In fact the TUC must call a general strike to bring down the current Labour regime, that is just standing by as the working class suffers with children going hungry, to bring in a Workers Government.
Such a government will take revolutionary action to get rid of backward, out of date and out of time British capitalism and replace it with a nationalised and planned economy that functions on the basis of satisfying the basic needs of the working class and the masses of young people.
There is no doubt that what is required is the building of the Workers Revolutionary Party and the Young Socialists to organise the much needed British and World Socialist Revolution to smash capitalism and consign it to the ‘dustbin of history’. where it belongs!
In this crisis situation where capitalism and its bankruptcy are there for everyone to see, it would be wrong to assume that the struggle is almost over and that capitalism will not seek a way out of its historic crisis and death agony!
Now is the time to complete the job, that is to build a mass Young Socialists movement of tens of thousands of revolutionary youth to mobilise the working class to complete the world socialist revolution, by smashing capitalism and bringing in a World Socialist Republic.
There is not a moment to lose!
