AMERICANS will be heading to the voting stations tomorrow in midterm elections that are widely predicted to be a massive rout for President Trump’s Republican party.
Trump himself has for the past month declared that these elections are significant as they will mark the starting point of a renewed campaign of bombings and missile attacks on Iran.
Facing a massive defeat for the Republicans at the hands of voters who overwhelmingly oppose the unprovoked war on Iran – a war that has driven the price of gasoline at the pumps to record levels and forced up the cost of living for US workers and their families – Trump clearly decided another futile escalation of the war before voting day would prove even more disastrous.
In preparation for a renewed US-Israeli attack, American media have reported briefings of Trump by US military chiefs laying out plans for a campaign of bombings and missile attacks aimed at causing maximum destruction of Iranian civilian infrastructure.
Released from the constraints of the midterm elections, a desperate Trump will be free to carry out even greater atrocities.
Trump last week called the proposed attack on Iran ‘another little Operation Epic Fury’.
Epic Fury was the US name for the unprovoked and illegal attack launched by the US and Israel on February 28th. This marked the start of a war that Trump promised would last just weeks before Iran capitulated to the might of the US military.
Eight months later and the US has been completely defeated on any of its aims of regime-change and asserting imperialist control over Iran and the vital Strait of Hormuz.
The ‘Epic Fury’ attack in February resulted in the defeat of US imperialism and massively accelerated the economic crisis, crippling American workers, along with the working class across the UK and Europe.
Trump’s ‘mini-Epic Fury’ will create the conditions for the entire Middle East to erupt in a war that will engulf the globe.
The Iranian government and military have made it clear that any renewed US aggression would trigger a confrontation extending beyond the region.
Iran’s army spokesman Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia, speaking on Saturday, outlined the outcome of meetings between senior military commanders and the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei.
At this meeting, the Iranian leader ordered senior military commanders to ensure that any level, or type of enemy threat, is met with an ‘immediate, impactful and geographically unrestricted response’.
Previously, Akraminia said, the Iranian response to US-Israeli aggression had been aimed at Israeli occupied territories and US military bases in regional countries.
Now, however, Iran’s military doctrine has undergone a transition from being exclusively defensive towards a more offensive approach.
Akraminia said: ‘Should a new military adventure be launched, US facilities, equipment, personnel, and interests could be targeted wherever they are within reach.’
With Iranian armed forces much better prepared to confront threats than they were in February, Akraminia warned that another war would last considerably longer than the previous one, and he stressed that Trump could not unilaterally determine its duration or the terms of conclusion.
The military defeat of US imperialism has sharply exacerbated the economic crisis, crushing world capitalism and increased the hostility of workers and youth to a capitalist system that in its death agony turns to wars in a failed attempt to dominate the world.
The working class alone has the power to end capitalism and imperialist wars that threaten the future of humanity.
Now is the time for the working class in the US, UK and Europe to intervene by forcing the trade union leaders to end their slavish support to their ruling class and immediately organise general strikes to bring down their capitalist governments and bring in workers’ governments and socialism.
This requires the building up of the WRP and Young Socialists in the UK and sections of the International Committee of the Fourth International in every country to provide the leadership necessary for the victory of the world socialist revolution.
