US prepares no-fly zone over Syria

THE news that the US secretary of state, John Kerry, was forced to scrap a planned visit to Israel in order to attend an emergency meeting at the White House, is a measure of the acute crisis the Obama regime has been plunged into by the victories won by the Syrian Army.

Following the rout of the pro-imperialist ‘rebels’ at the strategically vital town of Al-Qusayr last week Syrian government forces are now preparing for a major offensive on rebel-held parts of the northern city of Aleppo and its surroundings.

This decisive stage in the victorious battle to drive out these NATO-backed rebels has thrown the plans of the imperialists into complete disarray and prompted the emergency meeting between Obama, Kerry and the US security and military chiefs – scheduled to last all this week.

This whole meeting has been shrouded in secrecy, but un-named officials have reported that Obama is ‘leaning closer’ towards supplying weapons to ‘vetted, moderate rebel units’.

This, of course, is exactly the same line being pushed by William Hague and the French government through the EU – to supply ‘moderate’ rebels with all the weapons they demand, ignoring the fact that they are already being supplied with all the weapons they can handle courtesy of imperialism’s client Arab states, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

While Obama and Hague talk about only ‘moderate rebels’ being armed, the fact of the matter is that there are no ‘moderates’ amongst these rebels.

The ‘Free Syrian Army’, which NATO is so keen on, barely exists outside the conference rooms of the West where it is promoted as the leading opposition to the Syrian government.

On the ground however, the rebels are composed almost entirely of forces allied to al-Nusra which in turn is allied to al-Qaida.

These forces which have brought sectarian violence to Syria are the allies imperialism wants to use to completely destroy Syria.

But this is just one of the options reported to be under consideration; the other is using US planes to bomb the Syrian airforce and military and establish a ‘no-fly’ zone over Syria – the same tactic that was employed in Libya.

The creation of a no-fly zone enforced by the missiles and fighter-planes of the NATO imperialists has been demanded by Hague and the French ever since it became obvious that their jihadist allies are being driven out of Syria.

Despite US administration officials insisting that no decision has yet been made, Patriot missiles and F16 fighter planes have already been deployed to Jordan in preparation for establishing a no-fly zone over Syria.

That decision has clearly already been made – what is being discussed this week is whether to send US troops in on the ground to achieve the regime change that Obama and Hague have always insisted is their goal.

Regime change means ousting President Assad and installing a puppet, pro-imperialist, pro-Zionist regime in Syria.

Imperialist domination of Syria, which lies at the heart of the region, would open the way for the imperialists to launch war against Iran and Hezbollah and deal a huge blow against the Palestinian people.

This is the conspiracy – to plunge the entire Middle East into an all-out bloody war of imperial conquest – that is being hatched this week in Washington and being cheered on from the sidelines by the Tory warmonger Hague and French imperialism.

The same governments that are hated and reviled at home for their brutal assaults on the working class and youth are preparing complete carnage for the Arab masses.

The working class in Britain must take a stand against this common enemy by demanding that the TUC call an immediate general strike to kick out this government and put an end to these bloody imperialist adventures once and for all by going forward to a workers government and socialism.
