WILLIAM Hague has stood down as foreign secretary, but will stay in the cabinet as Leader of the House of Commons till the next election, Downing Street has reported.
In fact he has fallen on his sword, a broken man. He never recovered from the refusal of the working class to back his attempt to make war on Syria, and when Labour dared not defy its working class base on the issue his goose was cooked.
After that defeat he spent the rest of his career mouthing empty threats against Syria and Russia and touring the world with Angelina Jolie.
He remains in the cabinet and remains a member of parliament just till the next election, when he will be quitting politics, with his tail between his legs to write some sorry little books about his experiences, first of all as a failed Tory leader, then as a failed Tory Foreign Minister.
The rest of the government changes – at least 12 ministers will be leaving their posts, and three new women ministers are to be brought in, making six women ministers in all – is a tribute to the enormous combativity of the working class in the UK.
It has fought tooth and nail all of the government’s austerity measures, to the point where Cameron is making desperate changes to try to win the next General Election.
The fact that he did not win the last general election in 2010, despite all of the misdeeds of the Blair-Brown gang, underlines that these government changes are just the first of a number of measures of a very desperate nature to try and claw back some support.
Gove who was hated by the teaching trade unions and by large numbers of parents has been thrown to the wolves of the whips office.
Despite the fact that he was seen to be a threat to the Cameron-Osborne leadership, his sacking is a victory for the teaching trade unions whose strike actions he was keen to ban.
The fact that he is detested by the country’s teachers and the teaching trade unions, as well as many parents and pupils, means that ditching him can only be seen as an attempt to win more votes in 2015. His removal is a self-inflicted defeat for the government, that can only give encouragement to the whole working class to move forward to get rid of the entire Cameron government.
Responding to the departure of Michael Gove and the appointment of Nicky Morgan MP as Secretary of State for Education, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said: ‘Whilst some may celebrate the departure of Michael Gove from the office of Secretary of State, the issue for the education service, for teachers, pupils and the general public is not a change of Secretary of State, but a change of policy.’
This means that Gove’s removal is only the first step in removing the government!
Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers said: ‘Michael Gove has clearly lost the support of the profession and parents for justifiable reasons. His vision for education is simply wrong. His pursuit of the unnecessary and often unwanted free schools and academies programme, the use of unqualified teachers, the failure to address the school place crisis and endless ill-thought out reforms to examinations and the curriculum have been his hallmark in office. . . We remain in dispute over the direction of Government policy, which we believe is undermining the education service.’
Gove is gone but the task of removing this government remains, to save free state education.
Ken Clarke is among the old Thatcherite ballast to be thrown overboard, while David Willetts is replaced as universities minister by Greg Clark, who will attend cabinet.
Far from being over-run by women the number of women in cabinet has been increased from three to six, out of a total of 23 ministers in Mr Cameron’s top team.
The workers of the UK will cheer the removal of Gove, the retirement of Hague and the dumping of Willets and Clarke.
The trade unions must now seize the initiative, after all, Gove wanted to ban all strikes in the public sector.
The TUC Congress must finish the demolition job that the working class has begun. It must call a general strike to bring down the Cameron government and bring in a workers government and socialism.
