Defend Syria – bring down Cameron and Hague

GILLES DE KERCHOVE, the EU’s anti-terror chief yesterday told the BBC that hundreds of Europeans are now fighting with the counter-revolutionary forces in Syria against Bashar al-Assad’s government.

He said that intelligence services are concerned some could join groups linked to al-Qaeda and later return to Europe to launch terrorist attacks.

He added that the UK, Ireland and France are among the EU countries estimated to have the highest numbers of fighters in Syria.

Already in the Netherlands, officials have raised the terror threat level there to ‘substantial’ – partly over concerns about ‘radicalised citizens’ returning from Syria.

Despite the fears expressed above, the imperialist powers, driven by their own desperate economic crisis, are prepared to take in their stride that hundreds of their citizens could be blown up by their allies.

After all, what are the lives of their own citizens compared to grabbing the oil and gas riches of the Middle East? – provided they remove the Syrian and Iranian governments, smash the Hezbollah movement and then secure Israel by forcing the Palestinians to accept refugee camps as their state.

Already the French embassy has been car-bombed in Tripoli, following on from the killing of the US ambassador in Benghazi, but Libya remains without even critical remarks being made about it, since it is supplying large numbers of fighters armed with NATO weapons, supplied originally to murder Colonel Gadaffi, and now being used to achieve the same end in Syria.

The murder of the ambassador and the car bombing of the embassy are even being described, very charitably, as teething troubles of the new democracy!

The truth is that the imperialist powers have always worked with the Islamists against the Arab nationalists and that the mountain of corpses is seen as a price worth paying, provided the imperialists end up with the region’s gas and oil in their possession.

This is why, despite all the suffering, the hunger, poverty, deaths and outrages of all kinds that they have caused, the imperialist attack on Syria is now being greatly stepped up.

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday called on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) to prepare for the possible use of chemical weapons by Syria saying: ‘We should also carefully and collectively consider how NATO is prepared to respond to protect its members from a Syrian threat, including any potential chemical weapons threat.’

Earlier on Tuesday, Israel’s top military intelligence analyst, Brigadier General Itai Brun, said Syrian government forces had used chemical weapons against rebels trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

US President Barack Obama has said that the use of chemical weapons in Syria is a red line that would trigger further action from the United States. This is now being prepared. The war is being stepped up.

Syria on Tuesday condemned the EU decision to allow importing Syrian oil and its derivatives through exclusive transactions with the so-called ‘opposition coalition’, saying that this decision violated the principle of non-interference in the country’s affairs.

The Syrian Ministry of Awqaf (Religious Endowments) has condemned the terrorists’ abduction of Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo and Iskenderun, Bishop Paul Yazigi, and the Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan of Aleppo, Bishop John Ibrahim in northern Aleppo.

These abductions by the pro-NATO counter-revolutionaries bring Syria to its most explosive point yet. Soon we will be told that NATO has no alternative but to intervene.

In this situatio, UK workers must understand that the same ruling class that is intent on robbing and destroying Syria is also attempting to smash its NHS and Welfare State.

It was Lenin who coined the memorable slogan that the enemy is at home. UK workers must embrace it and take action against this common enemy of the UK and Syrian people by bringing the British ruling class down with a socialist revolution.
