YOUTH from Stockport College cheered as the YS March for Jobs and Free State Education set off on its latest leg from Stockport to Glossop yesterday.

The march hit Glossop yesterday afternoon and is staying overnight in the Glossop Labour Club.

Yesterday was another great day for the march, with dozens of recruits and huge support for the slogans as the young marchers chanted ‘Low pay, no way!’ ‘Youth demand jobs!’ and ‘We won’t pay tuition fees! Education must be free!’ as they marched.

The day started with breakfast at the Stockport Labour Club, where the marchers had stayed overnight on Monday.

Tom Grundy, the Labour Club’s chairman, said: ‘I’ve always been a socialist.

‘There is a rumour that there’ll be 1,000 jobs going at Stockport County Council. That, and the health service, are the main employers in Stockport.

‘This area, is not hit half as bad as Manchester.

‘I’m concerned that the unions seem to be very lackadaisical. They are very quiet. They don’t seem to have any plan.

‘So our committee was very pleased to welcome the Young Socialists march. I think it’s a fantastic initiative and I hope you get lots of publicity.’

Young Socialists National Secretary Joshua Ogunleye said: ‘First, I want to say a big thanks to Stockport Labour Club for their hospitality.

‘They gave us a place to sleep and a place to eat and they made us really welcome.

‘I just did an interview with High Peak Radio.

‘I told them that we are marching from Stockport to Glossop today and then on to Sheffield tomorrow.

‘We are calling for workers and youth to unite in struggle and organise a general strike to bring down the government.

‘The aggression towards the firefighters, with the police bringing in dogs is to try to scare the firefighters into backing down.

‘It shows the ruling class are desperate and will employ devious tactics to try to get their way.

‘But the working class is much more powerful and our march is going from strength to strength.’

Yesterday morning the march set off from Stockport Further Education College.

Before setting off, dozens of youth joined the Young Socialists and cheered the march as it departed.
