Clinton Beats The War Drums

SPEAKING to students at a Qatar university during a tour of the Gulf region designed to whip up anti-Iran feeling, US Secretary of State Clinton, told them, ‘Iran is becoming a military dictatorship.’

This is war talk on behalf of President Obama, the recent winner of the Nobel Peace Prize!

The line of thinking that this desperate line of spin is designed to ignite, is that since the current leadership of Iran have been demonised by the US, just what must be the character of the military men who are now seizing the power, desperate to get their hands on a nuclear bomb, that the US alleges is being built, and even more desperate to use it against the ‘innocent’ Israeli government and military, who have over 200 nuclear bombs – real ones – not figments of somebody’s imagination.

Obama is continuing with the Bush, Blair line, that was used against Saddam Hussein. This was that he was a danger to world peace, even though he ruled a country that had been weakened with 13 years of sanctions, and that he had wmds and the means of delivering them and was desperately seeking to produce a nuclear bomb, that he could have in a year.

These lies were used to launch a war that killed over a million people and displaced and turned into refugees a further four million.

Now the US is at it again and – as Blair made clear in his evidence to the Chilcot Inquiry where he also advocated military action against Iran – the UK is not too far behind.

US propaganda is quickly moving through all the gears, and is now suggesting that Iran could be just six months from being able to produce a nuclear weapon, and that the already demonised president and his supporters are being replaced by a mad Islamic military junta, that is already destabilising the Middle East.

What went for Saddam, so the message goes, is at least a hundred times more necessary for Iran, and its new military dominated leadership.

Clinton, in fact, said that Iran’s elite army corps, the Revolutionary Guard, had gained so much power they had supplanted the government.

Her words were ‘We see that the government of Iran, the supreme leader, the president, the parliament, is being supplanted and that Iran is moving toward a military dictatorship. That is our view.’

Clinton made it crystal clear what was ahead when she told her audience that the ‘US will not stand idly by and watch Iran acquire a nuclear weapon’.

This means that military action is a matter of months away.

On Thursday, the US announced it was extending the already-existing sanctions it imposed against a construction company which it claims is run by the Revolutionary Guard.

Before Clinton spoke, her aides revealed she is to pressure the Saudis to guarantee to China that they will meet any shortfall in its oil needs if Iran cannot supply them.

She will meet King Abdullah and Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal during her visit to the Saudi Arabian kingdom.

Clinton recently warned China that it would be ‘under a lot of pressure to recognise the destabilising impact that a nuclear-armed Iran would have in the Gulf, from which they receive a significant percentage of their oil’.

On Sunday, US Vice-President Joe Biden said he was confident Beijing would change its approach and back new sanctions.

In an earlier speech to the US-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Clinton said: ‘I would like to figure out a way to handle it in as peaceful an approach as possible, and I certainly welcome any meaningful engagement, but . . . we don’t want to be engaging while they are building their bomb.’

This means no engagement except of the military kind. After Blair and Co lied their way to war with Iraq, workers all over the world are not prepared to allow a US-UK-Israeli strike at Iran and its people. The TUC must be made to tell Brown that any Anglo-US attack on Iran will be met with a general strike to bring down the government.
