SPEAKING at the Labour Party Conference yesterday, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband denounced the previous Starmer regime’s full support for Israel’s genocidal regime, saying there has been a ‘reset’ under the new Burnham administration.
While dozens of demonstrators in support of Palestine were being arrested outside the Liverpool conference, Miliband called the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank ‘a stain on the conscience of the world.
‘I want to say to the millions of people in this country, and indeed elsewhere, who have been moved and outraged by the plight of the Palestinian people, we hear you. You were right.’
He said Labour had changed its approach under Burnham’s leadership, promising to challenge abuses in Gaza and the West Bank.
‘And under Andy’s leadership, we have reset our approach. We call out ethnic cleansing by the settler terrorists in the West Bank. We call out the evidence of war crimes in Gaza. We call out Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, and we match words with action.’
Miliband also announced measures targeting economic links with Israeli settlements, saying Britain would move beyond statements of condemnation.
‘We will ban the import of goods from illegal settlements. We will disrupt the supply lines for British finance, British construction, and British services for illegal settlements.
‘And when it comes to the attempt to destroy the two-state solution, this party, this movement, this government, says “we will not let you succeed”.
‘The bonds of solidarity between the British people and those who yearn for peace in Israel and Palestine are too strong to be broken.
‘Our decision to act mobilised the international community, country after country. This is how to make change happen in today’s world. Doing what is right and galvanising others to act too.’
Palestine supporter Shukri Mohammed told News Line: ‘At yesterday’s Labour conference, hundreds of individuals from across the country gathered to express their support for Palestine.
‘A large scale arrest operation was conducted, involving a diverse group of participants, including healthcare professionals, retirees, and individuals with disabilities.
‘Reports indicated that authorities were forcibly obtaining fingerprints from detainees, with transport vehicles stationed on Leeds Street and additional detainees being processed in the Wirral. By 6.30pm the situation escalated into disorder.
‘Law enforcement implemented containment measures, leading to further arrests and reports of heavy handed conduct by the police.
‘We have been informed that individuals were still being arrested after 6.00am on Monday morning.’
