DOCTOR Hadiza Bawa-Garba, who was struck off the medical register, has won a further victory and will now be allowed to start working as a doctor again, the General Medical Council (GMC) said yesterday afternoon.
The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) ruled yesterday that her fitness to practise remains ‘impaired’ but only because she has not treated patients since 2015. As soon as she is retrained she is clear to start work again.
She had been struck off over the death of a six-year-old boy Jack Adcock, who died of sepsis in 2011.
Dr Bawa-Garba was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence in 2015 over his death and the MPTS ruled that she could not practise for a year.
The GMC then appealed the decision claiming it was ‘not sufficient to protect the public’ and she was struck off for good in January 2018.
Thousands of doctors signed an open letter of support for Dr Bawa-Garba stating the case would ‘lessen our chances of preventing a similar death’ and they crowd-funded her appeal.
In August of last year she won that appeal at the High Court. Following that victory the MPTS has now ruled in favour of her again, that she can start practising as soon as her training is brought back up to scratch.
