‘ROBERT Mugabe has handed me his letter of resignation,’ the speaker of Zimbabwe’s Parliament announced yesterday, sparking wild celebrations.
Cheers, singing, shouting and dancing erupted across the country, with mass celebrations going on all through the night. Mugabe’s letter read: ‘I Robert Gabriel Mugabe hereby formally tender my resignation with immediate effect.
‘My decision to resign is voluntary on my part. I have resigned to allow a smooth transfer of power, kindly give public notice of my decision as soon as possible.’
Thousands of workers, youth and students had gathered outside the Parliamentary building in central Harare in Zimbabwe to witness the beginning of the impeachment process. But when Mugabe’s resignation was announced the impeachment process became null and void and a victory roar went up from the crowds.
