Iran calls for emergency UN meeting to condemn threats from US and Israel

IRAN has called for the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting over the threats by the US and Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic’s territory and critical infrastructure.

On Monday, Iran’s Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Gholamhossein Darzi, issued a letter to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres citing reports in the US media that the Trump administration has prepared a new round of military operations against Iran.

Last week, CNN reported that officials familiar with military planning discussions had told them that plans had been developed to strike Iran with the largest non-nuclear bomb in its military arsenal if Trump ordered renewed strikes.

Using this bomb, the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB – known by the nickname the ‘Mother Of All Bombs’) would be a massive escalation of the failed US war to inflict defeat on Iran.

The bomb itself contains about 8.5 tons of high explosive and is designed to explode above ground not on impact.

In his letter, Darzi noted that president Trump had discussed this weapon in a televised interview and threatened further attacks on Iran.

He also cited remarks by Israeli minister for military affairs, Israel Katz, that the Zionist regime is prepared to attack Iran and would attack ‘all energy targets’ in any renewed aggression.

The letter also pointed out that Katz had previously threatened to return Iran to the ‘Stone Age’ – echoing previous boasts made by Trump – besides claiming that the US and Israeli regime had dropped 35,000 bombs on Iran and that their military campaign was not over.

Darzi denounced Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for openly declaring an intention to launch another illegal unprovoked war against Iran and he added that the silence and explicit support of certain Security Council members has emboldened Netanyahu.

Darzi requested an emergency Security Council meeting, unequivocal condemnation of threats against Iran’s civilian infrastructure, accountability, and full reparation for all the damage resulting from the US-Israel illegal war.

He wrote: ‘The Security Council cannot remain silent in the face of explicit threats of renewed aggression and the destruction of essential civilian infrastructure,’ and once again reaffirmed Iran’s right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The imperialist nations like the US and its stooge Israeli regime have never been bound by Article 51. They treat any lawful opposition to their right to rule the world militarily for plunder by their capitalist classes as absolute.

The days when imperialist countries could wage war and enslave entire nations is long over and today the US is suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Iranian people.

In desperation, Trump is actively planning to use the most lethal force, short of a nuclear bomb, available in an attempt to avoid the inevitable.

Darzi’s letter concludes with a defiant warning to the US and Israeli regime that they would bear responsibility for the consequences of further aggression, including ‘the risk of unpredictable and uncontrollable escalation’.

On Monday, the spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) warned that the escalation by the US of ‘brazen threats’ against Iran would be met with a crushing response fuelling a ‘serious energy crisis’ across the globe.

Since the unprovoked US-Israeli attack on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz has been under the complete control of Iran and all attempts by the US, including naval blockades, have failed to secure the opening, strangling supplies of oil, gas and vital fertilisers.

The military defeat of the US has accelerated the economic crisis throughout the capitalist world and brought millions of workers and youth onto the streets demanding an end to imperialist wars.

The time has come for the working class to use its strength to put an end to capitalism and imperialist wars by forcing the trade unions to call general strikes in the US, UK and Europe to bring down their capitalist governments and go forward to workers governments and socialism.
