THREE Tory MPs – amongst the most ardent opponents of Brexit – Anna Soubry, Sarah Wollaston and Heidi Allen, announced yesterday they were deserting the Tories and joining the ‘Independent Group’ of eight right-wing Labour MPs who resigned from the party on Monday.
In their letter of resignation to Theresa May, the three said that Brexit had ‘redefined the Conservative Party – undoing all the efforts to modernise it’ and that there had been a ‘shift to the right’.
In fact, the issue of leaving the EU is doing much more than simply ‘redefining’ the Tory party. It has torn it apart, just as it has torn up the Labour Party.
The one thing that unites the defectors from the two main parties is their absolute determination to overturn the democratic result of the 2016 referendum, overturn Brexit and keep British capitalism tied forever to a bankrupt EU that is rapidly plunging into economic chaos.
Despite all the false-flag claims from the ex-Labour renegades of institutional racism as the reason for quitting, it is perfectly clear that this is an attempt to forge an alliance of MPs to carry out a Parliamentary coup against Brexit and the overwhelming vote to leave by the working class.
What we are living through today is nothing short of the complete break-up of the old two-party system that has politically managed British capitalism for over 100 years.
Despite all the pathetic attempts by Corbyn and the Labour leadership to hold the party together and despite May expressing sadness at the decision of her three defectors to quit and promising that the Tories will always offer ‘decent, moderate and patriotic policies’, it is clear both parties are split and fragmented beyond repair.
The inescapable fact is that both are proving totally incapable of dealing with Brexit or the complete break-up of capitalism, a crisis that has ruthlessly exposed the weakness of British capitalism.
Nothing illustrates this weakness more than the trip to Germany by Tory foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt yesterday to beg the German government to reverse its decision to ban arm sales to Saudi Arabia.
The reason for Hunt’s dash to Germany was that Britain would be unable to sell Saudi Arabia Typhoon fighter jets because vital components in them are made by Germany!
For all the Tory boasts about Britain ‘walking tall’ militarily in the world, the sad truth is that British capitalism cannot even build its own aircraft. This one incident underlines the historic decline and collapse of once-mighty British capitalism that no longer has any control over its own destiny.
From being the workshop of the world, industry is being smashed up, with car plants, steel works and what’s left of manufacturing industry closing down and the entire economy reliant on a banking system that had to be rescued through trillions of pounds of bail-outs from the last economic crash in 2008.
It is this crisis that is destroying all the old political parties that are still reeling from the vote of workers and youth in the referendum to leave the bosses’ and bankers’ EU.
With these parties torn apart by a capitalist system in its death agony, the working class will not sit back. It will come forward to take the power. In the Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx proved that the historical role of the working class is to be the gravedigger of capitalism so that humanity can go forward to a classless communist society.
Lenin and Trotsky and the Bolshevik party put their theory into practice with the 1917 revolution that changed the world forever.
Now history beckons to the British working class to come forward and liberate the planet from the remnants of British imperialism, as part of the victory of the world socialist revolution.
Every factory and plant threatened with closure must be occupied, the bosses and bankers expropriated and industry and banks placed under the management of the working class as part of a planned socialist economy, through a socialist revolution.
With both the Labour Party and Tory party disintegrating, the way has been cleared, and the necessity created for a massive building of the WRP and Young Socialists to lead the British socialist revolution.
