Trump moans about Iran’s ‘unbelievable duplicity’ as US-Israeli war suffers crushing defeat

US president Donald Trump went incandescent with rage on Monday when his latest declaration that Iran was begging for peace talks and that new negotiations would open yesterday was swiftly rebuffed by the Iranians.

Once again Trump was left fuming, posting on his social media site: ‘Iranian leadership is unbelievable, duplicitous’ and that Iran was desperate for talks because ‘Nothing gets through to Iran, unless we want it to, and nothing will get through, unless a Deal, or Total Surrender, is accomplished.’

This is just the latest of Trump’s empty boasts that the armed might of US imperialism has defeated Iran and that the crucial Straits of Hormuz would soon be open.

Like all his other claims of victory, this has proved nothing more than the deluded wishful thinking from the US president.

Also on Monday, a more accurate analysis of the situation was given by Mohsen Rezaei, an advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, who said that the US was actually defeated halfway through what he called ‘Trump’s third war’ against Iran – coming after earlier attacks carried out by the US and Israeli regime.

Rezaei pointed out that the duplicity and bad faith in the Trump administration had been clear from the beginning.

He cited the US violating previous understandings by creating a corridor south of the Strait of Hormuz and then bombing the area rather than referring any dispute to the designated conflict-resolution committee involving Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Recently, in an increasingly desperate attempt to secure the opening of the Strait and claim victory, Trump returned to large scale missile and bombing attacks targeting communications, bridges, radars and some military centres in an attempt to weaken the Iranian military.

Rezaei said: ‘Trump demanded heavier strikes from the (US military’s Central Command) CENTCOM commanders because conditions for a ground operation had not been created.’

He continued: ‘But his commanders replied that maximum capability had already been used and still they failed. This exposes the miscalculations of American military commanders.’

The crushing defeat of US imperialism and its Zionist ally to impose military defeat on Iran was underlined this week when it was revealed that a senior officer at CENTCOM had written to military analysts asking for ‘new’ ideas on how to progress with the war.

In a message sent out to a broad group of military analysts on Wednesday last week, an officer in CENTCOM’s intelligence branch wrote: ‘We are looking for new creative and unconventional ways to pressure and punish Iran.’

This highly ‘unusual’ crowdsourcing-style request by email is a clear sign of the US military failure to achieve any victory over Iran, and that it has run out of ideas of what to do next.

Rezaei warned that the Trump administration was already pursuing a fourth round of war by attempting to drag other countries into the conflict.

He cited the Ukrainian attacks on an Iranian ship and claims of Saudi involvement in bombings of Iraq. Saudi Arabia has denied any involvement while the Ukrainian regime claimed the attack was an ‘accident’.

Rezaei also noted Trump’s desire to activate NATO and, in particular, growing interventionist signals from Britain’s prime minister Andy Burnham who insisted on continuing to allow the US to use military bases in the UK to launch strikes on Iran.

He warned that America’s desperate manoeuvres risk igniting the sparks of a third world war, and that West Asia today holds far greater potential for escalation than Europe on the eve of World War II.

Capitalism is gripped by a terminal economic and political crisis that is driving it to the brink of a cataclysmic nuclear World War III as it attempts to reimpose its domination over the globe by military force.

Capitalism, in its final imperialist stage, has reached the end of the road and can only offer a future of wars and economic collapse.

The working class has the power to put an end to bankrupt capitalism and imperialist war by forcing its trade unions to call general strikes to bring down their capitalist governments and bring in workers governments and socialism.

This is the only way forward.
