US PRESIDENT Trump released a letter yesterday afternoon which stated that the summit between him and North Korean President Kim Jong-un has been cancelled. The summit was due to take place on June 12 in Singapore.

Vice President Mike Pence, in an interview on Fox News on May 21, said, ‘There was some talk about the Libyan model last week and you know, as the President made clear, that this will only end like the Libyan model ended if Kim Jong-un doesn’t make a deal.’

When the interviewer noted that the comparison could be interpreted as a threat, Pence replied, ‘Well, I think it is more of a fact.’ In response, yesterday morning, North Korean Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui said that ‘as a person involved in the US affairs, I cannot suppress my surprise at such ignorant and stupid remarks gushing out from the mouth of the US vice-president.’

Trump said in the letter: ‘Sadly, based on the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed in your most recent statement, I feel it is inappropriate at this time to have this long-planned meeting.’ Trump wrote further: ‘You talk about your nuclear capabilities, but ours are so massive and powerful that I pray to God they will never have to be used.’ He added: ‘Someday, I very much look forward to meeting you.’

On Thursday, North Korea had demolished its nuclear test site. At least three tunnels as well as other structures at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in the mountainous northeast of the country were destroyed by five explosions over the course of several hours.

In the case of Libya, Gadaffi was promised peaceful coexistence if Libya gave up its Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs); and when it did, NATO invaded Libya, murdered Gadaffi and destroyed the country.
