A slap on the wrist for bankers, but it’s to be war on the workers

PREMIER Brown’s speech at the Labour Party conference reeked with bourgeois morality and hypocrisy. There is to be a slap on the wrist for the bankers whose system has collapsed, while there is to be a war on the poor.

Brown blamed immoral bankers who had forgotten the supposed British values of ‘fairness’ and ‘responsibility’ for the crisis. He enthused that what we need is ‘moral markets’.

However under capitalism the ruling class worships the god of money, and the means of getting it through the super-exploitation of the working class, where all is fair.

For Brown, the capitalist system is the only possible modern form of life. It has no intrinsic crisis with its own laws of development. Only immoral bankers are to blame for its crisis.

Unfortunately he has been unable to produce any moral bankers, who did not engage in the vast speculation, gambling, and paper profit making, before the crash took place.

What is he going to do when they sin again. He says: ‘we will pass a new law to intervene on bankers’ bonuses whenever they put the economy at risk. And any director of any of our banks who is negligent will be disqualified from holding any such post.’

This threat will have the bankers trembling!

Brown however did admit the enormity of the task ahead, to repay just half of the debt caused by his aid to the bankers. To show his toughness he pledged: ‘Our deficit reduction plan, to cut the deficit in half over four years, will be made law in a new fiscal responsibility act.’ He is to legislate a cut of £90bn in four years, four years of savage cuts, that will have to be repeated to deal with the deficit.

No wonder Brown is worried about disorder in the working class. This range of cuts will cause a civil war.

While he is tolerant of immoral bankers, he is ‘savage’ in his attitude to the poor, and the youth, especially young single parents.

He says: ‘It cannot be right, for a girl of sixteen, to get pregnant, be given the keys to a council flat and be left on her own’, without saying what is wrong with this.

He adds: ‘From now on all 16 and 17 year old parents who get support from the taxpayer will be placed in a network of supervised homes. These shared homes will offer not just a roof over their heads, but a new start in life where they learn responsibility and how to raise their children properly. That’s better for them, better for their babies and better for us all in the long run.’

They are to be forcibly placed in homes, forcibly detained there, and made to learn responsibility. There is no such treatment recommended for immoral bankers, or the booze and drug ridden ‘Hooray Henrys’ of the bourgeois suburbs.

Brown wants to go back to the regimes of the English workhouses and the Irish nun dominated prisons where 16-year-old girl sinners were kept in forced labour for decades, while their children were handed over to be adopted.

Our Christian Brown has got it in for the poor because he knows that his policies and the crisis will create millions of poor, but rebellious young people. He wants to lock them up, and break them, so that they accept the system.

Poor working class families are to be dealt with in the same way. Brown pledges that the ‘new society’ will ‘stop anti-social behaviour, slash welfare dependency and cut crime. Family intervention projects are a tough love, no nonsense approach with help for those who want to change and proper penalties for those who don’t or won’t. . . . Starting now and right across the next Parliament every one of the 50,000 most chaotic families will be part of a family intervention project – with clear rules, and clear punishments if they don’t stick to them’, including eviction.

Brown is preparing a regime to hold the country down by force, and where 16-year-old girls that have babies will be criminals.

The only way forward for the wo crking class, the middle class and the poor is to organise the socialist revolution to put an end to capitalism by expropriating the bourgeoisie and bringing in socialism.
